Abstract : [Abstract] Ten human embryos and fetuses ranging in age from 39 days to 27 weeks were used to study the development of Chievitz's organ. The following results were obtained. 1) The organ is derived from the oral epithelium of the corner of the mouth at the level of the future upper second deciduous molar bud at 39 days of gestation, 2) The organ's anlage loses its connection with the oral epithelium completely, 3) It forms a relatively long solid epithelial cord, which runs anterio-posteriorly in the buccal mesenchyme, 4) It is a ductless gland-like structure and develops closely to the buccal nerve, 5) The parotid anlage first appears as an epithelial ingrowth from the corner of the mouth at the level of the future upper first molar bud at 39 days of gestation, 6) The anlage of Chievitz's organ and that of the parotid gland are located so closely that Chievitz's organ anlage tends to be mistaken for the parotid anlage, but they are never united, and 7) Chievitz's organ of a solid epithelial cord becomes 6.2 mm in length, but no lumen is formed even in the 27-week fetus.
