Abstract : [Introduction] For the past several years, an analysis of tooth mobility using the techniques which combine various impact generation methods with various impact analysis methods have been conducted on a trial and error basis. The impact was given by applying either to the random noise or sine waves or using an impact hammer. The analysis has been conducted using the frequency analysis method or by measuring the mechanical impedance. As a result, a tendency has been found that when the magnitude of mobility increases the peaks in the frequency spectrum analyzed move toward lower frequency ranges. However, the results were short of defining the magnitudes of mobility clearly. After several measurement techniques were tried with not-so-good results, a new technique has been tried in which the mobility is measured based on the data of vibration sound of the tooth caused by tapping it with a hammer, and the sound is picked up using a micro-phone. The use of the technique was conceived based on the fact that in clinical diagnosis of tooth mobility, the mobility can be known to a certain extent by tapping the tooth with a diagnostic hammer.
