Abstract : | The Editorial Board of the Bulletin of Kanagawa Dental College (BKDC) has decided to carry a special supplement on "Clinical and Research Topics." Current Vol.17, No.2 issue features short papers on "Clinical and Research Topics on Salivary Gland/Saliva." The authors are young, able researchers in the fields of oral anatomy, oral histology, oral microbiology, biochemistry, pharmacology and oral pathology, and clinicians in the fields of oral surgery and oral radiology, who are engaged in research in their respective fields at Kanagawa Dental College in Yokosuka. In this issue, they will introduce the results of their research on saliva and the salivary glands. The salivary glands consist of three pairs of the major salivary glands, as well as the minor salivary glands present within the oral mucosa. Morphologically, these glands are of the exocrine type. Saliva promotes digestion of food, has antimicrobial activity and serves as an acid-base buffer within the mouth. In recent years, it has been found that the salivary glands also have endocrinologic functions. |
