Abstract : Ligation of the excretory ducts of the submandibular glands in rats produces a marked glandular atrophy with structural changes. These changes look like symptoms of obstructive adenitis caused by calculi. The submandibular glands that became atrophied due to the duct ligation could be restored to normalcy after recanalization of the ducts. However, whether the recovery of acini is a result of cell differentiation in proliferating duct epithelia or the growth of the remnant acinar cells is yet to be clarified. Bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) is regarded as an analog of thymidine, which is incorporated into DNA during the S-phase of the cell cycle. By an immunohistochemical method using anti-BrdU monoclonal antibody, it has become possible to identify the BrdU-containing nuclei. The present study was conducted to shed light on the regeneration process of acini in the duct-ligated/unligated gland of the submandibular glands in rats using a BrdU-labeling method.
