Abstract : Murine lupus mice, in which systemic immunological abnormalities are expressed, are regarded as an "animal model of Sjogren's syndrome (SjS)" which involves spontaneous sialadenitis and dacryoadenitis. Up until now, particularly detailed studies have been conducted regarding sialadenitis in NZB mice and NZB/NZWF mice. In recent years, spontaneous sialadenitis in SL/Ni mice and MRL/Mp-lpr/lpr (MRL/lpr) mice has been the focus of attention. However, these mice have been more frequently studied as a model of SLE with nephritis than a model of SjS. Because the etiology of immunological diseases differs in various types of murine lupus mice, we have to consider the abnormal immunological responses specific to each type in studying the pathology of various diseases of organs (including sialadenitis) in these mice. MRL/lpr mice, reported by Murphy and Roths, are lupus mice in which monogenic mutation has occurred. They are characterized by the expression of massive lymphoadenopathy, splenomegaly, arthritis and glomerulonehpritis. These specific characters are attributable to the proliferation of abnormal T cells governed by an autosomal recessive gene, which is called a lymphoproliferative (lpr) gene.
