Abstract : The salivary calculi produced within the salivary gland or duct were first designated as "special stones" by Scherer in 1737. The salivary calculi or sialoliths (which mean salivary stones derived from Greek) are mineralized structures consisting primarily of calcium phosphate crystals. Sialolithiasis is the most common disease that refers to an obstructive sialadenitis of the salivary glands. Morphological studies of the salivary stones have been conducted using a scanning electron microscope in combination with an X-ray microanalyzer. Recently, ultrastructural studies by means of a transmission electron microscope have increased in number, and these studies have especially focused on the determination of the presence of bacteria within a stone and the identification of these bacteria. We now have a broad knowledge of the morphological architecture of salivary stones. Although several theories have been expounded as to the pathogenesis of stone formation, there is no unanimous agreement on this point.
