Abstract : The articles in this special issue were collected in order to organize the results of recent advances and ideas regarding periodontal alveolar bone. The need for a special issue that would focus on topics related to tooth supporting tissue was recognized for several years. In the human periodontal system, the most important function of the alveolar bone is to support the teeth in the rims of the sockets to which the fibers of the periodontal ligament are attached, although it has been thought that the behavior of bone surrounding the tooth is not different from other skeletal bone tissues. Interest in bone research has been shifted to the concept and investigation on subjects such as cell-cell and cell-matrix interaction, cell traction and attachment, osteogenesis, regulatory factors in bone cells and molecular aspects of bone resorption and formation. Simultaneously, a number of new questions arose from this area of study. One of the aims of this issue is to incorporate and apply the knowledge of the general field of bone research into the field of dentistry to arrive at an understanding of the tooth supporting tissues.
