Abstract : [Abstract] This study evaluated whether periodontal repair following reconstructive surgery using biodegradable Lactide/Glycolide copolymer-atelocollagen complex membrane may be enhanced or not. Submerged circumferential bone defect models which were produced surgically in six mongrel dogs were used. Two modalities were studied: 1) Control group, in which no membrane was used, and 2) Experimental group, in which the internal surface of the flap was lined with the membrane. After four weeks of wound healing, the dogs were sacrificed and healing response was analyzed histometrically. The membrane structure was clearly demonstrated and the new cementum formation was significantly increased in the experimental group. This result supports that the membrane was functioning as an occlusive barrier to promote periodontal tissue regeneration.
