Abstract : The temporomandibular joint disorder that is commonly called temporomandibular arthrosis can be classified into subtypes, and in recent years a number of methods has been used for the classification. Among these subtypes, a disorder characterized by articular disk dysfunction is classified as mandibular intra-articular disorder. Mandibular intra-articular disorder can be divided into two subtypes: a disorder in which the articular disk is not damaged, but displaced; and a disorder in which damage has been caused to the disk and the peripheral tissues. However, there is no clearcut distinction between these two disorders. Considering the possibility that the damage could occur when the displaced articular disk is left uncorrected, it is difficult to make such a distinction. This paper will discuss the disorders caused by the displacement of the articular disks. Among the clinical cases of articular disk displacement, the anterior displacement is observed most frequently, and this makes clinicians pay particular attention to the displacement. There are two types of anterior disk displacement: Anterior disk displacement with reduction and anterior disk displacement without reduction.
