Abstract : | The synovial fluid is the specialized fluid matrix lining the joint cavity which is the embryologically outercellular space of connective tissue. The fluid is composed of the serum transudate and the specific product from the synovial membrane cell. Ropes et al. had first reported that the normal synovial fluid mainly contained the permeable component serum protein and mucin originating from the synovial membrane cell. And Meyer et al. revealed that the component of synovial fluid mucin was a hyaluronic acid (HA) - protein complex. From these two discoveries, the detailed studies on the protein and HA of the synovial fluid could be made in the field of plastic surgery. In addition, the biochemical data of the synovial fluid supplied the important information on the diagnostic determination and the efficacious therapy of joint disease. The composition of glycosaminoglycan (GAG), the concentration of HA and the molecular weight of the acid enabled us to observe the degree of inflammation in the joint. Most GAG in the normal synovial fluid is HA. However, the existence of chondroitin sulfate has been found in articular rheumatism, osteoarthrosis of the knee and traumatic gonarthritis. |
