Abstract : [Introduction] In the past diagnostic imaging of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) was made by means of scout roentgenography, tomography, and arthrography. Recently, however, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been applied as a new modality in the diagnosis of TMJ, making use of the magnetic resonance phenomenon. MRI is able to outline images of the anatomical morphology, displacement of the disk, as well as movements of the disk and the condyle in TMJ, mainly using the spin echo (SE) and the gradient recall acquisition in the steady state (GRASS) as the pulse sequence to outline TMJ. [SE Technique] Generally TMJ is diagnosed with proton density weighted images, T1-weighted images and T2-weighted images of the spin echo. We used to make proton images routinely, namely, the closed and open mouth sagittal images and the closed mouth coronal images. In MR images, as shown in Fig.1, the cortical bone with less hydrogen atoms is darkly outlined at low intensity, and the spongy bone with abundant hydrogen atoms is bright at high intensity, which enables us to easily visualize forms of the articular eminence, fossa and condyle. One of the most important characteristics of MRI that even the disk form can be outlined, which was not feasible with conventional methods.
