Abstract : [Definition of Disease Name for Temporomandibular Joint Disorders] The current Japanese disease name gakukansetsusho for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders was used for the first time in Japan by Ueno who termed in his research paper entitled "Study on Temporomandibular Arthrosis," in 1956. Ueno adopted the term "temporomandibular arthrosis" by a hint from his English counterpart Foged. In a research paper entitled "Diagnosis and Treatment of Temporomandibular Arthrosis," that was announced in the same year, TMJ arthrosis was defined as a chronic clinical symptom that is characterized by pain at the mandibular joints and noise during mandibular movement and difficulties in opening the mouth. Since then, this name has been frequently used in the field of oral surgery and regarded as near-official name today. On the other hard, the draft for the classification of TMJ arthrosis by the symptom type, in response to the TMJ research directive issued in 1986, has proved to be very useful in treatment appropriate to individual clinical symptoms. The draft, however, may still have the problems in interpretation and classification methods that must be studied and modified further.
