Abstract : [Abstract] The addition of thermal expansive polymer (EXPANCEL(R)) to a heat-curing acrylic resin to improve polymerization shrinkage of the resin was studied. The dimensional change of the cured resin containing the expansive polymer was observed by a thermal mechanical analysis and a photographic recording method, and the mechanical properties of the cured resin were estimated by a compression test and a dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. The cured resin containing about 3 wt% expansive polymer showed three times the linear expansion than that of the original resin. The volume of the cured resin was markedly increased with the content of the expansive polymer in the resin and the mechanical properties of the resin had decreased slightly. Based on the results obtained, it is suggested that the addition of the expansive polymer is remarkably useful for improving the thermal and polymerization shrinkage of PMMA-MMA resin.
