Abstract : [Introduction] Aging is inevitable for all human beings. There is no drug for eternal youth and longevity. However, some people advance in years without any health problems and maintain activity suit-able for their age. For such purposes, some of the oriental herbal medicines have been used. Here I will describe our research on the mechanism of action of a herbal mixture, SK or TJ-960, which has been used as an anticonvulsant. This herbal medicine showed protective effects against neuron damage, proliferative effects of neurite extension and ameliorative effects on developmental defects of the El mouse which shows a hereditary high susceptibility to convulsions in addition to developmental defects in the neurons and glia. We found that some herbal medicines manifest action which maintains the best nervous function, the best balance in the nervous system, and consequently intractable nervous symptoms can be improved or eliminated dramatically. Here I will describe our long-term research on SK or TJ-960 from various points of view, and I will discuss future medicine, and what is the ideal therapy for the 21st century.
