Abstract : [Introduction] It is generally known that the degree of periodontal breakdown is increasing age. Chronic destructive periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory response of the periodontium (gingiva, periodontal ligament, cementum and bone) to the presence of bacteria, in the microbial plaque on the tooth or free swimming in the gingival crevice or pocket. The equilibrium between a microbial plaque attack and host response may be disturbed and, as a consequence, progression of a periodontal disease can occur. The periodontal reaction to microbial injury is a typical immune reaction. Both the cellular (T cell) and humoral (B cell) arms of the immune system have been involved in the pathogenesis of destructive periodontitis. The effect of age on the immune system has been under intensive study for some time, but we are still not quite sure of the age changes in that system. There are also same localized changes in the periodontal tissues which occur with age and inflammation. The following review deals with the physiological change occurring in the periodontium and classification of periodontal disease in relation to aging.
