Abstract : [Introduction] Acute dental pain arises from periodontal and/or endodontical-related emergencies. Pains of periodontal origin cause the conditions such as abscesses, cysts and necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (NUG). These conditions require immediate treatment. Grover et al. reported that approximately 20% of the emergencies were attributed to gingival-periodontal conditions. Pain is associated with the diagnosis and treatment of various periodontal conditions. Periodontal surgical procedures cause significant pain compared with other treatments. The use of analgesics is a very frequent and irreplaceable practice in dentistry that often influences the outcome of treatment, whether it be surgical or conservative. Following the development of laser by Maiman in 1960, considerable experimentation has been devoted to establishing appropriate applications in dentistry. Dental lasers could be used to perform intraoral soft tissue surgery without the use of anesthesia, some of which is discussed in this review. [Laser Application to Dental Treatment] There may be several potential applications of laser energy to dentistry.
