Abstract : [Introduction] Statistics show that more than 50% of all the patients with malignant tumor receive radiation therapy as definitive management, or as an adjuvant to surgery and chemotherapy, or palliation. The purpose of palliative radiation therapy is to improve the quality of life and to prolong the comfortable life. It must be directed to relieve painful symptoms and signs associated with malignant tumors. Actually, palliative radiation therapy is performed for relief of pain, relief of obstruction, control of blood loss, relief of systemic symptoms, suppression of specific tumor function, ovarian castration and prevention of fistula and as a placebo. Pain induced by malignant tumors is sometimes an intolerable burden to the patient and has a severe adverse effect on the quality of life. Pain is often associated with bone metastases, and bone metastases are frequent complications of malignant tumors in their late stages. Radiation therapy has been widely employed to treat bone metastases since it is known to be effective in relieving the pain and in promoting recalcification of osteolytic lesions.
