Abstract : [Introduction] Orofacial pain includes trigeminal neuralgia, atypical facial pain, alossodynia, and glossopharyngeal neuralgia, which are often most distressing, and tend to recur in spite of pharmacological therapy, alcohol blocks and stellate ganglion block as well as surgical treatments. Alcohol nerve block or surgical procedure, even if giving temporary pain relief, may later result in a considerable worsening of the conditions. In fact, there are many patients whose orofacial pain cannot be cured or even diagnosed adequately, despite extensive investigation and the available therapeutic methods. Recently, treatment by acupuncture has becoming increasingly used for patients with acute and chronic pain conditions. There is considerable evidence that acupuncture treatment is useful and can be an established therapeutic approach in the management of orofacial pain. Acupuncture is an ancient method of treating illness and pain, by inserting needles at particular points of the body, which was originally used in traditional Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese acupuncture requires a very specific technique and knowledge of yinyang, the five elements, the zang-fu organs, and acupuncture points as well as a method of diagnosis and differentiation of syndrome, which are quite different from that of Western medicine.
