Abstract : [Abstract] γ-Carboxyglutamic acid containing protein (osteocalcin, bone Gla protein ; BGP) is considered to play an important role in the mineralization process. Immunohistochemical localization of BGP was investigated in human teeth and in alveolar bone. Positive reaction was found in the intratubular matrix of dentin, in the secondary dentin, in some of odontoblasts and their processes, also in parts of the bone matrix and in the cement. However, no reaction was observed in predentin. The results support the concept that BGP is produced by odontoblasts and deposited on the mineralized dentin, and may control the mineralization process of dentin as well as that of bone.
