Abstract : [Abstract] Morphological changes of the brush cells in the main excretory duct of the rat submandibular gland were observed by transmission and scanning electron microscopes at 3, 7 and 14 day after the duct ligation of the main duct near the musculus masseter. At 3-7 days after duct ligation, the microvilli of the brush cell were fused together in a process-like structure, however, the bundles of filaments within the microvilli could still be clearly identified. After 14 day, individual microvilli in brush cells could be identified. This observation may indicate that brush cells are receptive to a significant alteration in the components of saliva.
