Abstract : [Introduction] Peri-implant and periodontal tissues are both clinically and histologically similar, however they are not identical. Moreover, clinical evaluation of peri-implant tissues is performed by using those same clinical parameters which have monitored plaque induced inflammation in the periodontium. However, certain clinical parameters such as mobility probably have a completely different clinical interpretation for an implant than for a tooth. The presence or absence of the periodontal ligament is perhaps the most critical difference. It is well known that the regeneration capability of the periodontal ligament is a biological possibility after either tissue injury or after surgical treatment for periodontal disease. However, it is generally considered that the biological absence of a true periodontal ligament around dental implants will alter the peri-implant tissue's susceptibility to disease. More specifically, we consider that the tissue-material interface is the most important.
