Abstract : [Introduction] Various kinds of biomaterials have been used in surgical operations following their marked development in recent years. According to the purpose of application, biomaterials are divided into two types : non-biodegradable materials that remain in the living body and are used semi-permanently, and biodegradable ones that are absorbed and degrade after accomplishing their purpose. However, even biomaterials that are considered excellent in terms of biocompatibility are still foreign bodies, and as such, are rejected by the living body as part of its self-repairing activity. Thus, biomaterials that play a role in healing are best absorbed and degraded. Most biodegradable materials are being applied in the field of surgery. Natural macromolecular biodegradable materials include collagen, gelatin, fibrin and chitin. Synthetic high-molecular materials are polylactide acid, polyglycolide acid, and others. All of them have been investigated as biomaterials, and are being clinically applied in the medical field.
