Abstract : [Introduction] The periodontal ligament (PDL) is a highly specialized fibrous connective tissue which is present in the space between the tooth and the alveolar bone. It plays an important role in supporting the teeth and in the remodelling and/or the homeostasis of periodontal tissue. Although it is ideal for dental implants to have PDL as in natural teeth, repeated attempts failed to create new PDL around dental implants. Experimental studies have indicated that only progenitor cells residing in the PDL are capable of forming new PDL. With the loss of a natural tooth, the PDL for that tooth is lost as well. Therefore, PDL cells have to be supplied in some way in order to create new PDL around dental implants, which are inserted to replace lost teeth. The chemical component of the implant surface is also important, because it may influence the differentiation of supplied PDL cells as a matrix. Boyko et al. reported that when canine demineralized roots were transplanted with cultured autologous PDL cells, new PDL was formed between the roots and bone.
