Abstract : [Abstract] The purpose of this study was to characterize the ability of cultured human periodontal ligament fibroblast (HPLF) to synthesize DNA, total protein and collagen when mechanical stretching and Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) were applied. DNA synthesis of HPLF was increased 1.3 fold by stretching and 1.6 fold by stretching +EGF as compared to control cells. The protein content of cell layers of HPLF was significantly increased by stretching and more so by stretching +EGF. The rate of collagen synthesis did not significantly change in response to stretching or EGF, alone or in combination.
