Abstract : [Abstract] Although there are many studies concerning periodontal regeneration, there are few papers on reinnervation of periodontal tissue. The purpose of this study was to investigate the reinnervation in periodontal tissue after surgery. The maxillary first molar palatal gingival tissue of nine adult rats was used. One, three and seven days after gingivectomy, the rats were sacrificed and then immuno-histochemistry was performed using the antibody for neurofilament protein (NFP). We did not find much marked dye-back degeneration of nerve fibers away from the lesion at one day. Nerve sprouting was observed from three days. Nerve fiber regeneration looked similar to the controls at seven days, and also the surrounding tissue had regenerated during the same period. All nerve terminal including the controls appeared to be free endings. [Conclusion] : Our results suggest that nerve repair had occurred by seven days subsequent to gingivectomy ; the surrounding tissue is also regenerated in seven days ; and that nerve endings do not change the shape after regeneration.
