Abstract : [Abstract] Effects of peony root extract on the expression of the seizure-related gene, PTZ-17, were examined. An extract of peony root completely normalized the increase of intracellular calcium which had been induced by a convulsant drug, pentylenetetrazol, in Xenopus oocytes which had been injected with PTZ-17 RNA. This result together with the previous findings suggest that peony root extract is a main component for the anticonvulsant action of a herbal mixture, TJ-960, and it is hoped that it will create an antiepileptic therapy using control of the expression of seizure-related genes. This is completely different from actual therapy against epilepsy.
