Abstract : [Abstract] To elucidate the detailed mechanism of the Reilly syndrome in oral medicine at the level of the spinal cord, expression of the immediate early gene, c-fos, was examined in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spinal cord. By electrical stimulation of usual strength, c-fos expression was observed in the laminae I and II of the cervical spinal cord and no expression was observed in the thoracic and lumbar spinal cord. This expression was the same as in the case of controls which underwent surgical procedure and physiological saline application. By strong and long-lasting irritation using croton oil application to the trigeminal nerve and cervical vagus nerve, c-fos expression was strongly observed in the dorsal, ventral and lateral horn of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spinal cord. Together with the previous electrophysiological experiments, these results suggest that strong and long-lasting irritation applied to the trigeminal nerve and autonomic nerves results in abnormal spread of c-fos expression and the lateral horn neuron serves as an important final common path for the appearance of the Reilly syndrome due to either the trigeminal stimulation or autonomic nerve stimulation.
