Abstract : [Abstract] To clarify the detailed mechanism of the Reilly syndrome in oral medicine at the level of the medulla oblongata, expression of the proto-oncogene, c-fos, was examined after electrical stimulation of the trigeminal nerve and cervical vagus nerve and also after croton oil irritation of these nerves as a severe and long-lasting irritation. By ordinary electrical stimulation of the trigeminal nerve, c-fos expression was observed in the caudal region of the trigeminal spinal nucleus and vagus solitary nucleus. Electrical stimulation of the cervical vagus nerve showed c-fos expression in the vagus solitary nucleus. Application of croton oil to the trigeminal nerve as well as to the cervical vagus nerve showed strong and wide c-fos expression in the vagus ambiguous nucleus, olive nucleus and lateral reticular formation in addition to the vagus solitary nucleus and caudal region of the trigeminal spinal nucleus. These results suggest that irritation of the trigeminal nerve or vagus nerve provoked c-fos expression in the same region strongly and widely in the medulla oblongata and this in turn resulted in identical pathological microcirculatory changes in various organs, and finally led to the Reilly syndrome.
