Abstract : [Abstract] Using SPATE9000, a dynamic stress analyzer which is capable of measuring stress under dynamic load by a non-contact method, the authors studied the distribution of stress by observing the dentures and underlying mucouse membrane centering on the alveolar crest from the sagittal plane. Dynamic loads, which are supposed to be occlusal forces, were applied to the rest areas of abutment teeth, each of the artificial teeth and the entire prosthesis resting on the edentulous areas of the dental arch designed on the study model with the maxillary bilateral free-end missing denture. A summary of our findings is as follows : 1) In the tooth-borne/tissue-borne partial denture fit for the residual ridge the closer the portion of the pressure is adjacent to an abutment tooth, the greater the stress on the abutment tooth became. 2) The concentration of stress was observed in the clasp terminal. This suggested that the denture-retaining force was created in the undercut portion of the abutment tooth. 3) In the group impact tests, the range of the distribution of occlusal stress extended evenly to alveolar bone, suggesting the importance of occlusal adjustment between opposing teeth in clinical practice.
