Abstract : | [Summary] Dentistry is largely the treatment of infections. The prevention and treatment of orofacial infection involve every aspect of dental care including caries, pulpal and periapical pathosis, gingival and periodontal disease, trauma, and reconstructive and implant surgery. The dental clinician must be aware of the large number of anaerobes that may be implicated in soft tissue and bone infection of the orofacial area and give them due consideration when diagnosing and treating an infection. The surgeon routinely faces the realities of the potentially pathogenic flora of odontogenic infection when surgical procedures are performed in or around the oral cavity. Antibiotics may be useful adjuncts but must be used with care. Anaerobic bacteria that causative agents of odontogenic infections are insensitive to many commonly used anti-microbials, and those to which they are sensitive have undesirable side effects. Isolation and sensitive studies are critical to ensure the nature of the infecting agent or agents. |
