Abstract : [Abstract] Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver usually caused by a hepatitis virus. Because hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) are transmitted via blood, dentists and other health care workers are at risk. Use of gloves is recommended. There are two types of hepatitis : acute and chronic. Acute hepatitis is mostly a self-limited disease. In the event of anti-HBs becoming positive, a vaccination will prevent hepatitis B. However, no vaccine is available for hepatitis C. Most people who have an HCV infection develop chronic hepatitis. Liver cell damage continues in these people for more than six months. Interferon is an effective treatment for chronic hepatitis C in many cases. The cure rate for chronic hepatitis C patients who receive IFN three times a week for six months is 10 to 30 percent. The efficacy of IFN depends on the genotype of HCV. Type 3 is most sensitive to IFN therapy. Both hepatitis A and E are transmitted in a faecal-oral fashion. The hepatitis D virus can infect a person only if there is an HBV co-infection. There have been no reported cases of hepatitis E or D in Japan.
