Abstract : [Abstract] This paper describes a case of atheroma (epidermoid cyst, keratinous cyst) of skin in the mental region which was extirpated intraorally. The patient was a 20 year old Japanese female who complained of a swelling in the mental region. The swelling was 15 by 15 mm in size, showed mobility with surrounding tissue except with a small area of epithelium in the overlaying skin. The clinical diagnosis was an atheroma of skin. The histopathological finding revealed an epidermoid type keratinous cyst. The lining epithelium shows several layers of squamous epithelium with a distinct granular layer. Extirpating the cyst intraorally did not cause a cosmetic defect on the skin (i.e.; dog-ear, suture scar). In the case of epidermoid cysts of skin located near the mouth, the procedure described may be a useful alternative approach.
