Abstract : [Abstract] Based on a preclinical study showing the synergistic anti-tumor effects of recombinant interleukin-2 (IL-2) and interferon-β (IFN-β) on mice tumors, we investigated the effects of the combination of these cytokines in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma. The study showed immunological effects on the activity of T cells and natural killer (NK) cells. Three patients were treated with intra-and peri-tumoral injections of IL-2 and IFN-β for ten consecutive days. None of the patients achieved a complete or partial response. However, there was a gradual increase in the enhancement of the NK activity of the peripheral blood lymphocytes. The each percentage of Leu-11, Leu-7, Leu-3a and Leu-2a positive cells was slightly increased in peripheral blood lymphocytes. Furthermore, the Leu-2a, Leu-4, Leu-3a and Leu-11 positive cells infiltrated in cancer tissues after the administration of IL-2 and IFN-β.
