Abstract : [Abstract] Apoptosis is defined primarily based on the morphological characteristics of cells, and can be determined only through morphological observation. Therefore, morphologically multifarious observations provide the most important basis for judgement. A confocal laser scanning microscope is superior to any conventional microscope in definition and resolving power, especially along the Z-axis. By means of ACAS570 (confocal laser scanning microscope), the distribution of nuclear DNA content and the three-dimensional analysis were very useful in the detection of morphological apoptosis. In this report, for the purpose of clarifying morphological changes in nuclei of apoptosis, a thorough description of the new analytical methods using a confocal laser scanning microscope are given.
