Abstract : [Abstract] We attempted to establish an easier and safer technique of providing topical fluoride gel treatment. Thirteen young adults volunteered to be subjects for topical fluoride application using disposable tray for fluoride gel which is not available in Japan. The amounts of fluoride collected from the mouth were measured. It was found that the technique combined with a non-woven fabric liner and 4 g gel showed the lowest amount of residual fluorides in the oral cavity averaged 2.46 mg. No adverse reactions are expected to develop at this level of residual fluorides. Thus, the use of a liner made of non-woven fabric was effective to reduce the amounts of gel needed for covering all tooth surfaces and the amount of residual fluorides in the oral cavity. These favorable results were also attributable to the use of a saliva ejector during treatment, wiping the tooth surfaces with gauze after removal of the tray ; and spitting three times after removal of the tray. On the basis of these results, we recommend all techniques which were used in this study for the simple and safe conduct of fluoride treatment of tooth surfaces with a disposable tray.
