Abstract : [Abstract] This study was designed to confirm the involvement of apoptosis in the morphological changes of cells induced by gamma ray irradiation and anticancer agent (vinblastine sulfate) in the human-derived oral squamous cell carcinoma cell line KB. To detect the apoptosis, we employed three-dimensional analysis of karyomorphism using confocal laser scanning and transmission electron microscopies and the Tunel method. By gamma rays irradiation, the induction of apoptosis was recognized morphologically. The Tunel-positive cell ratio indicated that apoptosis was induced at the highest rate 96 hrs after irradiation (1Gy, 5Gy, 10Gy, 20Gy and 50Gy). Vinblastine sulfate induced apoptosis in the morphological context. These results suggested that apoptosis took part in the mechanism of tumor cell shrinkage which was affected by radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
