Abstract : [Abstract] The purpose of this study was to further explore the suitability of gadolinium as a contrast medium for one-shot dual energy subtraction radiography by examining its separation from bone of various thicknesses. The test phantoms composed of bone steps, soft tissue phantoms and gadolinium contrast medium were imaged using one-shot dual energy subtraction with computed radiography. The image quality was compared as well as the density ratio, separation index and energy spectra. The combination of the gadolinium contrast medium and samarium filter produced a dichromatic energy spectrum with low energy component (40-50 keV) important to yield good images. Only the gadolinium contrast medium and samarium filter combination had a larger separation index than the control, regardless of bone thickness (P<0.05). The samarium filter has optimal k-edge for one-shot dual energy subtraction with gadolinium contrast medium and is an optimal filter for an improved image quality.
