Abstract : [Abstract] The submandibular gland (SMG) is under the control of the sex hormones, and for this reason, plays important roles in development and sexual maturation in rodents. The SMG contains various kinds of substances with activities modulating male and female gonad functions and attenuating the gonadotropin effects in the gonads. Thus, the gonadal functions and the normal growth and maintenance of the gonads or accessory sex glands are controlled with negative feedback mechanisms by the SMG-gonad axis in the normal course of reproduction in the animal.
