Abstract : [Abstract] The purpose of this study was to clarify the characteristics of vertical and dentoalveolar compensations regarding the skeletal pattern of dentulous subjects. This study used the cephalometric measurements of 117 dentulous Japanese with complete dentitions including the third molar. The skeletal pattern of these subjects was classified as Class I, Class II and Class III, using the anteroposterior dysplasia indicator (APDI). The inclination of the occlusal plane, the vertical dimension and the inclination of the lower incisor tooth were measured in the cephalograms. From 117 subjects, 73 (62%) were classified by the APDI (81.0+-4.4) measurement as skeletal Class I, 15 (13%) were Class II and 29 (25%) were Class III. There were significant correlations between the inclination of the occlusal plane to the AOP and the APDI (r=-0.27, p<0.05). There were significant correlations between the vertical dimension (ANS-Xi-Pm) and the APDI (r=-0.41, p<0.01). The inclination of the lower incisor to the center of the condyle to the incisal line was significantly correlated with the APDI (r=0.57, p<0.01). The occlusal plane, vertical dimension and inclination of the lower incisor based on vertical and dentoalveolar compensation should be applied for diagnosis and treatment planning of the individual skeletal pattern during the correction and reconstruction of occlusion, especially full mouth covered reconstruction and full denture reconstruction.
