Abstract : [Abstract] The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of toothbrushing habits and the use of dentifrice on the occurrence of wedge-shaped defects. We also examined dental plaque deposits to confirm the effectiveness of toothbrushing. The subjects consisted of 118 students in the 5th grade of Kanagawa Dental College in 1996. They were asked by questionnaire to choose single answers to the following items: daily toothbrushing frequency, the duration of each brushing session, and the amount of dentifrice used each time. Then an oral examination was performed to detect any wedge-shaped defects (WSD) and to determine plaque control record (PCR) scores as proposed by O'Leary. As a result, although the oral hygiene status was often significantly affected by the daily toothbrushing frequency, there was no association between the frequency, brushing duration, or use of dentifrice on the occurrence of WSD. The results also suggest that use of appropriate brushing methods should be recommended.
