Abstract : [Abstract] The purpose of this study was to examine the masticatory function of patients wearing complete dentures, which were newly fabricated under consideration of the skeletal pattern obtained from the lateral cephalogram. Five edentulous subjects, consisting of two men and three women were selected (mean age 70.2 years). The measurements of mandibular movement during masticatory function were simultaneously recorded via a Sirognathograph Analyzing System III and electromyography of the anterior temporal and masseter muscle using surfaces electrodes. By using masticatory parameters which included chewing rhythm, muscle activity, chewing time and stability of the closing pathways in the area around the intercuspal position (ICP), the masticatory function was compared among patients wearing conventional dentures and those with newly fabricated dentures. The results showed that the masticatory parameters of newly fabricated dentures tend to decrease in comparison with these of conventional dentures. It was suggested that the masticatory function of newly fabricated dentures tended to be greater than conventional dentures.
