Abstract : [Abstract] This article evaluates implant therapy which uses titanium implants for partial defects of the incisor region, in which considerations of aesthetics are needed, and for those of the molar region, in which functional aspects are stressed. Conditions necessary for the aesthetic restoration of defects by implant therapy are: 1) The margin of the super structure should be set below the gingival margin, 2) the gingival morphology should be compatible with that of the neighboring teeth, 3) the interdental papillae should be preserved, 4) the mucogingival junction should be continuous with that of the neighboring teeth, and 5) the prostheses should be consistent in shape and color with the neighboring teeth. Conventional implant therapy can be performed without problems in many cases where these are defects in a small number of teeth or in the intermediate teeth in the molar region. However, as the remaining teeth are used as abutments and clasped teeth for prostheses, considerable burden is placed on the remaining teeth due to drilling injury and increased load. In the case of free end defects or multiple-teeth defects, the stability of the jaw position is often impaired, and this jaw instability is considered to be particularly notable in the cases of bilateral free end defects. For this reason, it is difficult to prevent the destruction of occlusion by conventional prosthetic methods, and it is expected to lead to an enlargement of defects in the future. In such cases, implant therapy is considered to be a highly reliable prosthetic method, because it provides a stable jaw position.
