Abstract : | [Abstract] The processes of microvascular changes from implantation to osseointegration and after applying occlusal pressure are observed under a scanning electron microscope (SEM) using a vascular resin cast model. Titanium implants were inserted in the mandibula of beagle dogs. A vascular resin injection was given l4, 30, and 90 days after implantation, and 30 and 180 days after the super structure setting. Microvascular changes around an implant consist of five different stages as follows: (1) The vascular regeneration stage (0-14 days after implantation): the start of osseointegration, the vascular network penetrates to the bone-implant interface. (2) The bone formation stage (14-30 days after implantation): at this stage, bone aposition follows the regeneration of newly formed blood vessels and osseointegration proceeds rapidly. (3) The osseointegration stage (90 days after implantation): osseointegration achieved with peri-implant bone forming along the implant. The bone surface is coincident to the rough implant surface and no blood vessel is observed. (4) The remodeling stage (0-30 days after loading): in the bone-implant interface glomerular vascular loops have formed. Elliptical Howship's lacuna is observed on the bone surface. (5) The bone maturing stage (90-180 days after loading): The vascular network has penetrated the Haversian canals in the laminated peri-implant bone. From the microcirculation point of view, the blood vessels which regenerate around the implant, are necessary for the remodeling of the peri-implant tissue. |
