Abstract : [Abstract] In the present study we carried out immunohistochemical analysis in rats to identify distribution of nerve cell bodies and nerve fibers which contain glutamic acid as a neurotransmitter in the trigeminal nuclei. Female Wistar rats were used in this study, and they were perfused transcardially with fixative. Glutamate-immunoreactive (Glu-IR) cell bodies and varicosities were detected by immunofluorescence technique. In the confine of cytoarchitechtonically defined trigeminal motor nucleus (Vm), a few Glu-IR varicosities were observed on motoneurons and their proximal dendrites. Dense Glu-IR fibers were seen in the caudal subnucleus (Vc) of the spinal trigeminal nucleus (Vsp), and a number of Glu-IR cells were encountered in the trigeminal main sensory nucleus (Vp) and the interpolar subnucleus (Vi) of Vsp. A number of Glu-IR cells were also observed in the parvocellular reticular nucleus (pcRN) adjacent to Vsp and around Vm.
