Abstract : [Abstract] The present study was undertaken to determine the mechanism by which catalase or horseradish peroxidase (HRP) enhances luminol chemiluminescence (CL) in the presence of H2O2. The H2O2 (which concentration did not emit luminol CL by itself)/luminol CL was enhanced by FeSO4, HRP and catalase, in a concentration-dependent fashion. The enhanced luminol CL was diminished by iron chelator deferoxamine, suggesting that the observed effects afforded by HRP and catalase are the reaction via iron iondependent mechanism(s). The inhibitors of catalase and HRP had no effect on this reaction system. Hence, catalase and HRP may enhanced H2O2-induced luminol CL independently of its peroxidase activity.
