Abstract : [Abstract] Mandibular prognathism is a disease most frequently found in Japanese orthodontic patients. The purpose of this study is to investigate the longitudinal changes in the craniofacial growth of two patients with skeletal class III malocclusion. Materials used in this study were serial cephalograms, X-ray photographs of the hand and wrist, and records of height and menarcheal age of the patients from the pre-pubertal to the post-pubertal period. The craniofacial growth was evaluated by means of a percentile. The results gathered indicated that orthopedic appliances, if used properly could be effective for skeletal mandibular prognathisms with certain limitations, in view of their restraint and acceleration effect on maxillo-mandibular growth. These findings suggest that severe skeletal Class III malocclusions be treated before puberty since practitioners can utilize the advantage of the growth factor in the treatment process. It appears to be important to understand the significance of pubertal growth in the management of malocclusions in the future, particularly in the longitudinal relationship of the craniofacial process.
