Abstract : Although microscopic and structural alterations in the articular surface and the disc associated with the pathology of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) have been studied, the mechanisms underlying the development of these changes still remain relatively unexplored. Internal derangements are not purely a mechanical problem. These disease processes can include immunologically mediated conditions analogous to rheumatoid arthritis, but most commonly are related to osteoarthritis. Moreover, the effect of these changes on the synovial fluid (SF) is only beginning to be understood.
