Abstract : | [Abstract] Nitric oxide (NO), a gaseous free radical, synthesized from L-arginine is known to be an important regulator of arthritis. In this study, NO levels were measured in the synovial fluid (SF) of patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). We investigated the relationship between the levels of NO in SF and arthroscopic findings of synovitis or cartilaginous degeneration. Furthermore, the expression and distribution of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) within the synovial tissue of the patients were examined using an immunohistochemical method. The results were as follows: 1) Increased levels of No were seen in SF from the patients with TMD. However, in controls. NO levels were mostly below the detection limit. 2) The increased levels of NO in SF were closely related to the arthroscopic diagnois of OA. However, there was no correlation between the levels of NO and synovitis. 3) An immunohistochemical study revealed that iNOS expression was demonstrated in the synovial lining in patients with TMD. In contrast, in the controls, there was no iNOS staining in the synovial lining cell layers. These results indicated that NO might play a role in the pathogenesis of synovitis and degenerative changes of cartilaginous tissue and bone of TMJ. |
