Abstract : | [Abstract] The purposes of this paper are to characterize the function of the craniomandibular system, to show how the system reacts to different states of occlusion and to demonstrate the effect of masticatory muscle activity and mandibular movement during the grinding motion on occlusal guidance with different guiding areas and steeper guidance on the working side. Devices of onlay-type guidance for grinding movement made of metal were fixed on the teeth of subjects from the canine to the second molar. The influence during grinding of masseter and temporal muscles on each guidance was measured by surface electromyography (EMG). Metal guidances that were steeper than the SCI value, furthermore, were fixed on canines only, and condylar movements for each of the steeper guidances were recorded with an electronic axiograph and measured by EMG. Our results show that the activity of these muscles during grinding movement increased as a function of guidance from front to back, and steeper guidance on the canine teeth was correlated with decreased muscle activity. However, steeper guidance on the canine teeth caused condylar movement toward the rear with respect to the reference position of the mandible. Interdependence of muscle activity and mandibular movement is a characteristic of the craniomandibular system (CMS). |
