Abstract : [Abstract] The purpose of the present study was to investigate the reproducibility of volume measurement with three-dimensional ultrasonography (3D-US) and to actually measure a tongue volume with 3D-US. Bracken-starch pastry and boiled egg volumes were first measured to determine the accuracy of this 3D-US measurement. Both direct and 3D-US measurements were triplicated. Mean direct and 3D-US values were measured, respectively, showing no significant differences between direct and 3D-US measurements. A tongue volume was also measured 3 times. Then tongue volume was measured again because to determine the extent of errors in volume measurement by tracing that the circumference of tongue on an image obtained by one-time scanning was traced 3 times. There were no significant intra-examiner errors on all data (p<0.01). From these results, it was confirmed that volume measurement with very high accuracy can be achieved by this 3D-US method, and a tongue volume can be simply measured using this method.
